The Yellow Top has a succulent leaf. After rain, meadows of Yellow Tops can be found between the dunes but also stretching into the lower parts of the dune areas.

This flower grows mostly on top of dunes after rain. It can reach up to 2 metres in height and is also know as a rattle pod due to the distinctive seed pod.

Around the 1900’s this area was suffering from a long drought.
A young family were stationed at Annandale, about 120km north-west of Birdsville. The children’s father was away droving for many weeks, and their mother, thinking they were all going to die, sunk into madness and poisoned them both. Their mother was found soon afterwards wandering around in the dunes.
The girl’s graves can be found by the ruins of old Annandale.
